“To give away money is an easy matter and within anyone’s power.  But to decide to whom to give it, and how large and when, and for what purpose and how, is not in every man’s power, nor an easy matter.” -- Aristotle

    Class Description:

Today the world is in crisis. Greta Thunberg respectfully challenges governments and us to do more - we are not ‘doing enough’ about climate change; instead we sit back watching our world burn.  We recognize and salute her passion and commitment – and wonder what we can do too.

Again, concerned governments have developed the 17 Sustainable Development Goals for our future – and the planet.  These are the things that we have to address as global citizens or lives will be lost and the world as we know it turned upside down.

And so, the big question becomes “What can we - you, me, the family next door, our friends and colleagues - actually do to change things?”

This course will show you what you can do and how you can do it now.  There are ways you can take power into your own hands and make a difference by the way you Give.  It offers a new approach to altruism that combines a heartfelt response with compassionate, considered action designed to change the world.  Smart from the Heart provides tools, skills and perspectives to change the world through your altruism and compassion and will leave you with your own, unique Giving Plan for 2020, the confidence to be generous and the inspiration to make a difference – because we can, together.

In this course Elizabeth Morris and Ann Rundle will share with you their years of learning, tears, frustrations, laughter and creative philosophies for dealing with the world of social development and change-making.  They will share their hard-won methods for bringing about change in the world in thoughtful, heartfelt and practical ways.  As experienced trainers, counsellors, mentors, coaches and project managers, these teachers have been working to empower women, change outcomes for children, and caring for the planet in different parts of Africa and Europe for more than 35 years.  They bring to this e-course not only their years of teaching and real-life experience but a shared passion for finding out what actually works.  They are among the most practical changemakers you will ever meet.

    About the Facilitators:

Elizabeth MorrisElizabeth Morris – Elizabeth is an experienced psychotherapist and social impact specialist.  After a career of supporting schools to care for the mental health of their pupils and advising the UK government on developing a curriculum on emotional health and wellbeing, she moved to South Africa where she worked as a yoga teacher for a number of years.  But her lifelong passion for supporting people to make the most and best of themselves and empowering women was fired-up again by a rural job creation project she become involved with. Since then, she has been conducting social research on ‘what really works’ to change lives of vulnerable people in southern Africa.  She works as a consultant to a Change agency based in the UK and is currently co-creating a curriculum for schools, The Compassionate Classroom, which aims to turn every classroom into a place of safety for children.

    Ann Rundle 2

Ann Rundle - Ann works daily in the fields of counselling, coaching, training, spiritual accompaniment and people development, in communities that do not have easy access to resources. She aims to see the potential in each situation and through relational interaction brings people to a deeper realisation of what is good in their lives and how to operate from one’s strengths rather than weaknesses.

After almost 30 years in the field Ann says: “I have the best job in the world.  I get to see people realise they are allowed to have dreams and have the untapped ability to reach for those dreams. Communities change, one person and then one family, at a time.  The challenge is to stay with the process and learn from it, not to give up and not to attempt to make people live their dreams your way.  This work takes humour, compassion, perseverance and a willingness to always be learning from others. That is the holy ground I live and work in.”
